Arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a procedure that removes the excess of skin and fat from the upper and inner arm, resulting in an increased firmness and a more natural contour.
Arm tissues relax and drop with age and gravity, but the effect can be particularly dramatic after significant weight loss following bariatric surgery, such as gastric band or gastric sleeve. Indeed, most people are left with stretch marks and excess skin that no exercise can improve. The damage can be particularly visible in women’s upper arm area, in which fat tends to be stored in excess. The extra sagging can result in a deformity from the axilla to the elbow, also known as “bat wing” deformity. In addition, if the skin has got a poor elasticity and does not contract with conventional liposculpture, then brachioplasty is highly indicated.
The procedure: The Arm Lift procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 2 hours. The length of the surgery can vary depending on whether the Arm Lift is combined with another procedure. The surgeon will make an incision under the arm, usually from the elbow to the armpit, but the size of the incision may vary depending on the amount of skin to be removed. The surgeon will remove the extra skin and then stitch up the skin to maintain it its new position. The procedure will significantly improve the contour of the arm.
The recovery process: The patient will spend one night at the clinic. The stitches are removed after 7 days. Strong bandages are applied on the incisions to reduce the bruising and swelling. Patients are able to resume light work activities after 2 weeks, sometimes earlier. The results are visible after a month.
