A safe method of fertilisation!
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) better known as artificial insemination is an assisted reproduction procedure that artificially places the sperm directly into the uterus of the woman in order to achieve pregnancy. The spermatozoids are handled in laboratory to separate the fast moving spermatozoids from the weaker ones, before being placed in the uterus at the time ovulation. The goal of the intrauterine insemination is to have spermatozoids swim up the fallopian tube to fertilise a released egg. The insemination can be done with the sperm from the husband (AIH: Artificial Insemination by Husband) or from a donor (DI: Donor Insemination).
The artificial insemination procedure can help when:
- The man or the woman has mild fertility problems or unexplained infertility
- The male partner suffers from impotence or premature ejaculation
- The man or the woman cannot have sexual intercourse, for example because of a physical disability, sexually transmittable viral infection, in some rare cases allergies to the sperm of the partner
- No particular fertility problem, but may not have a male partner and need to use donated sperm, for example in case of same-sex relationship
