Gain a smoother, wrinkle free expression!

Botox is a variety of the Botulinum neurotoxin that is produced by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. It is used medically for a variety of medical conditions, such as chronic migraine, overactive bladder syndrome, and upper limb spasticity. In aesthetic surgery, Botox is used to treat and prevent the appearance of wrinkles in mainly the upper areas of the face, and especially for the reduction of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as glabellar frown lines. It is also commonly used for the appearance of ‘crow’s feet’ around the outer corners of the eyes. Wrinkles occur due to a number of reasons, but especially facial wrinkles around the area of the forehead and the eyes are predominantly caused by the contraction of muscles during facial expressions. In order for muscles to perform this contraction, nerves release a chemical called acetylcholine at the point where the endings of the nerves connect with the muscle and cause the muscle to tighten. When Botox is injected into these areas, it acts as an inhibitor for the release of acetylcholine, thus preventing the contraction of the muscle and the resulting occurrence of wrinkles in the skin.

Botulinum toxin comes in powder form for medical use, which is then diluted in a saline solution to be administered in the skin where needed. During the procedure, the Botox is injected with a thin needle, directly into the neuromuscular tissue where the nerve endings and muscles meet. Whilst Botox injection is not an invasive plastic surgery, some temporary swelling or bruising at the injection site may occur, but will disappear shortly after the procedure is completed, resulting in minimal recovery time. After administration of the injection, it takes between 24-72 hours for the results to become evident, as the acetylcholine inhibiting qualities of Botox require a certain amount of time to take full effect. In some patients this process may take up to five days, depending on the body’s receptiveness or immunity to the toxin. The effects of a Botox injection last for about 3-4 months, and there is no set number as to how often the treatment can be repeated. There are generally very few possible side effects, and Botox has been approved for repeated medical and aesthetic use by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration).
