Chin surgery or mentoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure that aims to reshape the chin. Many times a plastic surgeon may recommend chin surgery to a patient who has done a nose job in order to achieve a better facial balance, since the size of the chin may magnify or reduce the perceived size of the nose. The combined surgery is called perfiloplasty.
A chin surgery can be done to increase the size of the chin, either with facial implants or bone grafting: Chin augmentation surgery.
The augmentation chin surgery can:
- Correct weak chin and project it forward, thus improving the jawline
- Enhance the definition by providing roundness and fullness to the chin
- Correct potential asymmetry or deformities caused by a congenital condition or an accident
But, the surgery can also be done to reduce the size of the chin, by sculpting the jaw bone: Chin reduction surgery. This chin surgery helps provide harmony and balance to your facial features so that you feel better with your image. The chin augmentation procedure with implants tends to be more frequently done than the chin reduction surgery.
The procedure: The surgical procedure is done under general anaesthesia and the procedure takes on average 2 hours. However, depending on the case and the type of procedure used it can take as little as one hour and as long as 4 hours.
Chin Augmentation surgery: The incision can be made below the chin or inside the mouth on the jaw bone at the junction of the skin and gum. The implant is introduced through the incision and placed into position to achieve the desired look. The implants are made of solid silicone or rubber, and comes in different shape, size and form. In some cases and if required, the implant can be designed for a specific patient need. Once the implant is in position, the surgeon will stitch it up. Although chin augmentation with implants is permanent, it can be sometimes preferred to used own bone or fat. There is always a slight risk of infection and rejection, with an implant. This risk does not exist when the own bone or fat is used. Moreover, if the chin surgery is combined with a reduction rhinoplasty or a neck liposuction, bone and fat from these procedures can be used as natural implant.
Chin Reduction surgery: The incision is made inside the mouth in the lower lip, which makes the scar totally invisible. The surgeon will use his instruments to remove and smooth up the bone to achieve the desired result.
The recovery process: The patient will have to stay one night at the clinic. Patients may have mild discomfort from bruising and swelling around the chin and mouth, but this can be controlled with medication. Stitches are removed after a week and patients will generally resume normal activities after as little as 10 days. The swelling and bruising usually disappears after 7 to 10 days, and the result is clearly visible after 2 weeks.
