Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip-implant-surgery-300x231

Hip replacement with prosthesis is by far the most common type of hip surgery. This surgical procedure is required to release the pain caused by advanced arthritis.

The main cause of hip disorder is arthritis: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic arthritis are the main forms of the disease:

  • Osteoarthritis or degenerative arthritis is a disease that generally occurs late in life. Osteoarthritis is due to the loss of cartilage that protect the bones. When the joint wears out, the bones start rubbing against each other causing a stiff pain. Osteoarthritis can affect any cartilage in the body, but it is frequently occurring at hip level.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune disease in which the synovial membrane (membrane that encapsulates the joints) is regularly inflamed. This inflammation can damage the cartilage that protect the bones.
  • Post-traumatic arthritis is slightly less frequent and is due to a previous injury such as fracture in which the cartilage has been damaged.

The procedure:

The rate of complication is very low for a hip replacement surgery, it is probably one of the safest surgery. The procedure is generally carried out under general anaesthesia and takes one hour and a half. The surgeon makes a vertical incision on the side of the hip, removes the damaged hip joint and then replaces it with the prosthesis.

The recovery process:

Patients will have to stay 5 nights at the clinic, before being discharged. You will walk with crutches for 4 to 6 weeks maximum. Total recovery is reached after 2 to 3 months.

Recommended clinics: Marbella High Care Hospital, Vithas Xanit International Hospital, Quiron Hospital Group, Hospital Doctor Galvez.

Hip Arthroscopy

Hip-Arthroscopy-300x181

Hip Arthroscopy is a simple procedure that may be used for a variety of hip conditions, but primarily for cartilage tears, with or without loose bodies, and for hip impingement.

There are other less frequent hip conditions that may require arthroscopy, for instance ligament injuries, hip instability or inflamed synovial membrane.

Arthroscopy is very popular among Athletes from all sports as it is safe, efficient and prevent future problems. These conditions if not treated with a hip arthroscopic procedure will eventually lead to arthritis.

The procedure:

The hip arthroscopy can be done under local or general anaesthesia and takes generally about 2 hours, but it can vary depending on the damage. The procedure is minimally invasive. The surgeon will use a tiny camera called an arthroscope to see inside your hip. A small cut is done around the hip to insert the equipment inside the hip. One or two additional small cuts may be done to introduce other instruments into the hip to fix the problem.

The recovery process:

The patient will spend one night at the clinic. After surgery you will walk with crutches for 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the root cause for the hip arthroscopy. You will not be allowed to put any weight on the site that has had surgery in the first week, then you will be able to put more an more weight. Most people can go back to work after 10 days post-surgery and resume light activities. It is advised to start a physiotherapy programme one week after the surgery in order to improve the recovery.
