Implant surgery is a frequent procedure to replace the root of a missing tooth. The results are excellent with a success rate of over 95% and are permanent as the implant is entrenched in the jawbone, just like the roots of a natural teeth. It is important not to leave a missing tooth without implant because over time the bone and gum surrounding that specific tooth will disappear and destabilise the surrounding teeth, thus resulting in their loss as well. This is a well known problem with fixed bridges or synthetic dentures.
Implant surgery is performed by an oral & maxillofacial surgeon instead of a regular dentist as it requires a specific set of skills and knowledge. Implants are made of titanium because of its bio-compatibility and its ability to blend with the bone. It is necessary to leave a gap of several months from the time the implant is introduced until the moment that the crown is set, in order for the bone to consolidate around the implant. Unfortunately there is no possible short-cut around that process.
