Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder-replacement-surgery

Although shoulder replacement surgery is not as frequent as hip replacement orknee replacement, it is as efficient to release the pain.

Shoulder replacement is recommended in case of advanced degenerative arthritis.

Early diagnosis and treatment of shoulder problems can make a considerable difference in the long run.

The Shoulder replacement can be total or partial:

  • Total Shoulder replacement: Replacing the arthritic joint surface with prosthesis made of a highly polished metal ball attached to a stem, and a plastic socket. This is the most common procedure.
  • Reverse Total Shoulder replacement: In this procedure the normal joint structure is reversed. The ball is attached onto the scapula (where the socket normally is), and the plastic socket is positioned on the head of the humerus. This allows the stronger deltoid muscles of the shoulder to takeover much of the work of moving the shoulder, thus increasing joint stability. A reversed procedure is use for patients with a severely torn rotator cuff.
  • Partial Shoulder replacement: Replacing only ball without the stem or/and without the plastic socket. This procedure is also called hemiarthroplasty.

The procedure: The procedure to replace your shoulder joint with prosthesis usually takes about 2 hours and is generally done under general anaesthesia. The incision is made on the front of the shoulder to facilitate the access to the damaged joint. In a total shoulder replacement procedure, the surgeon removes the upper part of the humerus to replace it with a long metal piece with a round head.

The recovery process: The patient will spend 6 nights at the clinic and the stitches are removed after 7 days. Rehabilitation should start the following day after surgery.

Recommended clinics: Marbella High Care Hospital, Vithas Xanit International Hospital, Quiron Hospital Group, Hospital Doctor Galvez.

Shoulder Arthroscopy

shoulder-arthroscopy

The shoulder is the most stretchable joint of the body, but this elasticity also makes the shoulder more vulnerable to trauma.

Early diagnosis and treatment of shoulder problems can make a considerable difference in the long run.

Less invasive techniques such as arthroscopy are generally preferred, however in some cases delaying surgical replacement can increase the risk of complications at a later stage.

Frequent shoulder problems that require intervention are shoulder instability or frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tear, impingement syndrome, calcification or degenerative arthritis.

The procedure: The shoulder arthroscopy can be done under local or general anaesthesia and takes generally about 2 hours, but it can vary depending on the damage. The procedure is minimally invasive. The surgeon will use a tiny camera called an arthroscope to see inside your shoulder. A small cut is done on the shoulder to insert the arthroscope. One or two additional small cuts may be done to introduce other instruments into the shoulder to fix the problem.

The recovery process: The patient will spend 1 night at the clinic and the stitches are removed after 7 days. The recovery time vary based on the cause of the problem and the initial damage. Full recovery can be reached after as little as one month, and up to 6 months. Patients can return to light work activities after a week, but again it can take longer depending on the procedure.

Recommended clinics: Marbella High Care Hospital, Vithas Xanit International Hospital, Quiron Hospital Group, Hospital Doctor Galvez.
